On January 2, 2021, I was biking up Sheridan Road, a route I took daily and had for years. Cycling was the love of my life; I rode about 20 miles most weekdays and around 50 each weekend day. The day was slightly overcast but not too cold. The snow had started to melt, though traces remained on the grass-covered parkways.
As I followed my usual route, I suddenly felt something push me off balance. Glancing to my left, I saw a white box truck had veered into me. I was pinned between the truck and the curb but managed to move forward and regain my balance. Then, without warning, a tremendous force struck my back, catapulting me over my handlebars and onto the snow-covered parkway.
I quickly sat up but immediately felt a sharp pain on the left side of my body, signaling that something was broken. Witnesses to the accident followed the truck and blocked its path. A few women asked if I was okay, and I requested that they call the police. In a haze of shock, I also asked bystanders to take pictures of the truck’s license plate, which no one did.
The truck eventually drove away, but the police and paramedics arrived soon after, along with my husband, a nurse, who took me to his hospital. It was later confirmed that I had fractured my scapula and sustained nerve trauma to my cervical spine. Additionally, I discovered that my hip had been misaligned during the accident.
While my scapula eventually healed, I continue to deal with nerve trauma in my cervical spine. However, I’ve found relief through various physical fitness activities and chiropractic services, which have been instrumental in managing my pain and aiding my recovery.
